Quicksilver does 10,000ft

The build is finished - well not really - I have lots of things to do to complete things to my satisfaction. I sorted out insuring and registering Quicksilver, fitted my plates and I was ready for my first exploration of the local roads. The speedometer hadn't come back from Speedograph Richfield so I had to use a GPS. This needed a ciggie lighter socket which required alterations to the wiring. The 10,000ft run was the next weeekend and it was Tuesday already! A buzz round the block without anything falling off was a good start and then Jan came out and apart from worries about speed and the noise seemed to enjoy the experience! A spin over to show the car to my son and his family went OK except I noticed a bit of oil on the garage floor from the breather the next day.

I went over to see Duncan the next day as a shake down run and to let him see my build. The car didn't run very well and wouldn't accelerate without a bit of choke. After a trip round the block with Duncan again we noticed oil on the ground where I had parked. When I got home I checked the oil and discovered I'd lost about 500ml, Leeds - Ripon - Leeds, not good. A quick bodge was a catch bottle and we were ready for the Saturday run. Again nothing fell off which rather surprised me as lots of people report bits dropping off initially.

An early start found me buzzing along the Leeds ringroad and when changing down to 2nd at the lights the gear lever came out! A quick look under the bonnet revealed that the clamp holding the extension to the hockey stick lever had come adrift - five minutes later we were off again.

The weather was glorious but a bit cold and mindful of the oil problem I checked my bottle near Skipton and found about 200ml which, being a green (or mean) sort of person, I recycled into the engine. I made good time to Ingleton and again checked the bottle - gone! So down to the local garage and after rooting through the rubbish bins I found a used oil container. A cable tie secured the bottle and then we were off in smallish groups of abou four to six cars. There were six Pembletons driven by Malcolm (one of the organisers), Mike, Sam, Duncan, Tom and me. Duncan was driving the odd one out - a Brooklands and all engine types were present.I's interesting to see how different the cars look despite being mechanically the same.

The run up to Tan Hill Inn was superb but again the poor carburation didn't make it feel that good driving. Over lunch Tom suggested raising the needles which we did and I poured back the oil into the sump. Then, after the obligatory Pembleton photo shoot, we continued the run with Sam and his navigator leading the way the six Pembletons, in a convoy, winding our way over the moor and down into the valley. The car was running much better aftter the needle were raised which was pleasing.

At the comfort stop I transfered yet more oil and we were off again. Somehow the tail enders, Mike and I, got too far back and missed a turn. By the time we realised what had happens we were alone at the roadside trying to decypher the route instructions. Luckly a Marlin with a co-pilot map reader went past so we got onto his/her tail and eventually got to Dent for another comfort stop - we must seem like a group of incontinents needing all these stops! I thought the front end treatment of this 2CV engined special looked very neat

We all met up in the main Ingleton car park for a final natter and eyballing of the various cars. A bottle was presented to the organisers who did a splendid job including ordering good weather, farewells said and then we set off on our separate ways home. Duncan and I set off eastwards and parted ways in Skipton. I then checked the oil but little has been collected so I didn't bother topping up the sump. When I got home I discovered the the breather pipe was down in the oil in the bottle and not much oil vented. I don't really understand why I'm having these problems yet Tom Rae's car with a similar engine vents about the same amount of oil in 1000s of miles that I vent in tens of miles.

Jobs to do over the winter - well giving people a spin in the car will be high on the agenda. I need a tonneau but the main jobs are getting the oil problem sorted and the carbs adjusted. I was given the name of Bogg Brothers as people experienced in tuning - they have a rolling road and aren't too far from Leeds. A wet 'n dry session to remove the scratches and then endless polishing will have to wait until later.
