FWIW, my experience of ferry staff has been poor, they are generally grumpy and impatient, in fact best avoided! That said I take the ramps slowly and have not grounded yet despite often being "fully loaded".

I've had the complete opposite from ferry staff ! I use the Hull/Rotterdam or Zeebrugge ferry relatively regularly and the loading crew have always shown an interest in the car and generally give me the thumbs-up.

The ramp problem is perhaps lessened at Hull as the dock is isolated from the tidal estuary which means the ramps are usually at the same angle to the landing/loading areas.
The rise-and-fall ramps at South coast ports may be less easy to negotiate. My only outing from a Channel port was to Caux-Retro in 2010 through Dover and the only problem I had then was operator malfunction at the Passport control on the way back. In trying to get nearer to the window I went so far to my left that I hit the steel-clad kerb and split a tyre. Very embarrassing!
