Making your own luggage rack or adapting an existing one seems to be the way to do it. Autojumbles and cars shows for your mirror or try the Complete Automobiliste

I plan on making my own for Victoria. I picked up some old solid brass stair rods at a brick-a-brack store. I'll cut the ends of and shape some blocks of hardwood to the shape of the barrel back and create a rack.

Although I have a pair of coach-house rails with separate cross bars to be fitted as necessary I prefer not to use the luggage rack if I can avoid it.
Any load tends to obscure rear vision from the central mirror totally. My preferred luggage space is inside the rear top. Putting in a floor with part mudguard creates as much space in the dry as you can get on a rack IMHO.
That said, bringing in a couple of cases of wine from France without a rack is only possible on a solo trip as its not fair to ask Pam to run all the way home!
