A pre-test MOT is certainly not a requirement. Regarding weighing, Martin C found that VOSA were happy to weigh the car before the full test - which was an essential factor - with the additional bonus of their own weighing equipment; none of this "plus or minus 10%" caveat.

Hi

I agree that any trip to a weighbridge or 'pre mot' check would mean you are not insured - not good news for the person you drive in to!! I have had the mispleasure of being driven into by an uninsured driver and it cost me a lot of money!

However after checking with vosa and insurers I can and did drive legally to an mot centre to have my emissions levels tested - this was after the Iva test fail and before retest.
In each case they booked it into their diary so it could be confirmed by police or insurer.
Obviously tha same would be the case if you were having work done by others.

Other than that you are insured for the drive to and from the test centre by a reasonably direct route for your booked test

When I insured the cars I explained to the insurer what my intentions were and they accepted that.
